Château de Commarque, on a 20,000-year-old decorated cave, offering free or guided tours.

Dormant for 400 years, the castrum of Commarque was covered by abundant vegetation. It was saved in the3rd millennium by a direct descendant of the eponymous family! The site, which rests on a 20,000-year-old cave (closed to the public), has gradually been cleared, revealing troglodytic shelters, a 12th-century keep, a dwelling, a chapel, an entire defense system and knights' tower-houses. In July 2024, a new, fun and illustrated tour of the site was launched, with numerous events throughout the summer.

Ein schöner Nachmittagsspaziergang ca. 20 min. , bevor man vom PKW-Parkplatz am Schloss ist, aber es lohnt sich. Eintrittspreisangabe stimmt nicht, es sind z. Z. 9,50€. Man bekommt an der Kasse einen A4-Hefter in seiner Sprache, der (zumindest was die deutsche Version betrifft) sehr ausführlich alles Wissenswerte erklärt. Der Aufstieg bis ganz oben ist etwas anstrengend, aber der Ausblick über die Gegend lohnt sich. Festes Schuhwerk ist ein Muss.

Un magnifique château qui nous renvoi à travers le Moyen-Age. Merci à toutes ces personnes qui ont permis de le rénover afin de le faire revivre et qui continu chaque jours. Il vaut vraiment le détour.

The chateau is beautiful, unfortunately, they stop letting you in two! hours before closing. You can't find this information on the website or even on the ticket office window. It is a long way to get there, we were lucky to get into the yard for several minutes, but that's it.
