The steeple that dates back to the th century is the oldest part of this church, one of which was killed by a hurricane in the th century. At the origin of Romanesque Basilica, Saint-Julien is then rebuilt in the Gothic style. The two small chapels on each side of the choir date back to the th century. After the Revolution, Saint-Julien was abandoned and ruined. It will be restored in the th century under the impetus of Prosper Mérimée, Inspector of Historical Monuments. In 1859, it will regain its primary vocation. If it is so pushed on the adjacent streets, it is because it was built before the Loire dikes are raised because of flood risks. During the Second World War, in an area yet extremely exposed, the church miraculously escaped the bombing that destroyed the area.

Today, concerts are very often organized in this beautiful building.
