There are some 123 dry-stone huts around Excideuil. To discover them, you'll need to put on some good shoes and take to the town's magnificent hiking trails. A number of signposted loops are available from the Tourist Office. All different from one another, they bear witness to the constant cultivation and stone-pelting of the causse's ungrateful soils. Phylloxera, the rural exodus and the abandonment of agriculture were all responsible for the abandonment of this remarkable rural heritage.
