Northstar is by far the most upscale resort on Lake Tahoe. Located on the north side of the lake, it covers more than 1,200 acres with a 690-meter vertical drop. Built on the site of a former local sawmill, the area includes 93 trails, some of which are dedicated to cross-country skiing, a village, hotels and other accommodations. In summer, Northstar offers outdoor activities and an 18-hole golf course. Lift prices are a bit higher, but the park and its scenery - with panoramic mountain views - are beautiful.

Established in Pacific Beach and Mission Beach - as well as in Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Los Angeles - this school is renowned for the quality of its surf lessons. There's a choice of 1h30 private lessons for 2 or 3 people, or group lessons for 4 or 5. Of course, prices aren't cheap, but the instructors are particularly attentive to their students' needs and adapt to their level. Pacific Surf School also offers surf camps ranging from 3 half days to 5 full days, as well as surf equipment rental.

The resort is the oldest and smallest in the Los Angeles area. In summer, it's the place to be for skiing and snowboarding, while in winter it's reserved for cyclists, hikers and disc golfers - a game played according to the rules of golf, but using discs that resemble a Frisbee.
