1 review

The park gathers most places held by the forces of the Union at the time of the head office of Vicksburg (May 19th /25th - July 4th, 1863). About fifteen sites are to be visited. It also shelters USS Cairo Museum and National Vicksburg Cemetery. In Visitor Center, a 20 minute old film and exhibitions recall the battle of Vicksburg and the living conditions at the time. The visit of the park is done easily in autotour with its own vehicle, according to a tour whose plan is given to the entrance. From one site to another, the red markers announce the campsites held by Confederated and the bleus those held by the Union. Historic reconstitutions are usually programmed of the beginning of June to at the beginning of August. USS Cairo, exposed little before National Vicksburg Cemetery and the opposite end of the park, is a battleship with iron hull of the Navy Union commissioned at the time of the Civil War, in January 1962. Length 53 15 m meters from a bus stop and wide, it was composed of a crew of 251 sailors. It was named according to the town of Cairo in Illinois. On December 12th, 1862, this drain-hole was the first ship run by a marine mine on Yazoo River. USS Cairo was reinflated in 1964 and is registered with the National Register of Historic Places since 1971. A 6 minute old film recalls the reinflation of the ship and some rooms and saved objects of the ship are exposés.
Le Vicksburg National Cemetery accommodates the skins of 17,000 soldiers of the Union, including 13,000 unknown soldiers. It also shelters the remains of veterans of more recent wars. Most soldiers of the Confederation died during the head office of Vicksburg are buried in Cedar Hill Cemetery, apart from the park and north of the city.

LONGWOOD

Mansion to visit
5/5
1 review

The only house of Byzantine influence on the banks of Mississippi. This octagonal house of red bricks and white woodwork is topped by a dome shaped by bulbs, such as Orthodox churches. Originally the house had to have six floors, but construction was interrupted by the war of Secession and the poor doctor Nutt, owner, died of pneumonia and grief without having seen his dream completed. His descendants lived on both floors of the house for a hundred years. Now classified as a historic monument, the house is worth a visit.
