The archaeological site of Moundville, located on the Black Warrior River near Tuscaloosa, has been identified as an ancient site belonging to the Mississippi Amerindian civilization. It was reportedly used for political and ceremonial purposes. The 75-hectare, 185-square-metre archaeological park
was declared a national historic monument in 1964 and would be the second most important Mississippi era site in the United States after Cahokia, Illinois.
