It represents two caving clubs, the Spit Club St Maixentais in St-Maixent-l'école and the Société Archéologique et Spéléologique du Mellois (SASM) in Melle. The CDS 79's main missions are to protect cave-dwelling fauna and the underground environment, coordinate speleologists in their exploration and clearing of caves in the département, conduct scientific research, promote and teach caving, and organize the Journées Nationales de la Spéléologie (National Caving Days) in the département.
