The association was founded in Nantes in 1991. Its first projects focused on the city of Nantes, which was France's leading trading port in the 18th century, and on the Loire-Atlantique region. In 1992, the association organized the exhibition "Les Anneaux de la Mémoire" (The Rings of Memory), the name of which was subsequently retained. The exhibition was a huge success, attracting more than 400,000 visitors to a subject that was nevertheless very difficult to deal with in terms of Nantes' past. It marked an essential turning point in the work of remembrance carried out in Nantes and more generally in France, and all historians refer to it today as it played such an important role in the recognition in France and in the field of the history of the slave trade and slavery. The association is particularly committed to promoting historical knowledge on the subject, defending cultural diversity, opening up to the world and working on memories, particularly those linked to slavery and the Western slave trade. With a view to promoting balanced, reciprocal exchanges between societies in Africa, America and Europe, it carries out cultural projects at international level, in collaboration with local organizations.
