With a permanent population of around 1,100, almost doubling in summer, South River is the gateway to canoeing in Algonquin Park, and boasts the second-busiest access to the park after Highway 60. The village is home to two provincial parks: Algonquin, 20 kilometers to the east, and Mikisew, 12 kilometers to the west. South River offers a wide variety of facilities for the whole family, including a skating rink with year-round ice, curling clubs, tennis courts, baseball diamonds, a library, a daycare center, a Royal Canadian Legion, a women's resource center and a seniors' home.
