Bars for a drink are open all day and often all week. In larger cities or tourist places, these are more like copas (cocktail bars), frequented after dinner, so rather around 11pm and more. It's Friday and Saturday nights that they'll be stormed. Happy hours are only practiced in university cities like La Laguna or Las Palmas, and nearby. Some bars sometimes close with the last customer.

Age restrictions

As far as drinking is concerned, you have to be 18 years old. But children are almost always associated with outings. You will see them, even very late, accompanying parents to patron saint parties and standing on stools to have their heads at the height of the barra, or even sitting on them. But not in bars and discos...

What's very local

As in many parts of Spain, establishments in the Canary Islands make their own "vermouth", the often popular homemade aperitif. In the summer, almost everyone goes for Tinto de Verano, a red wine served with gaseosa, Spanish lemonade and sometimes a dash of cooked wine as well. After the meal or in a beach chiringuito, the chupito, a small glass of liqueur is very much appreciated. You should also try the Canarian barraquito, a coffee, milk and liqueur as well as the ron con miel, a must for Canarian festive evenings.
