Jamaican cities are laid out in the American style, with stores located in shopping malls. Stores are generally open from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and shopping malls are open later, as they also include restaurants. Sundays are generally closed. Duty-free stores and craft markets are open every day.
The duty free stores, reserved for foreigners, all have a branch in the capital, but it is better to reserve your purchases for the tourist centers of Port Antonio, Montego Bay or Ocho Rios. The hypermarkets, present in all the shopping centers, are well supplied.
Stores display the unfailing color combinations of yellow, black and green, and the Rasta colors of green, yellow and red. Although Jamaicans don't buy the same T-shirts as tourists, they love to dress in the national colors. Don't hesitate to haggle in the small souvenir and handicraft stalls - the sellers will expect nothing less from you!
Counterfeits of all the major international brands can be found in the markets (and stores) in the downtown areas of major cities. Be careful not to overpay for poorly made products, or to bring back counterfeits that are prohibited.
