HISTORIC CENTRE OF BRIDGETOWN
Read moreThe Bridgetown centre consists of a military garrison erected, like the surrounding streets, by the English during their colonization of the island. This colonial style, in contrast to the style of the Spanish and the Dutch, surprises its narrow and winding streets. The whole was built in 2011 on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
This historic heart also evokes the glorious economic past of Barbados. The island was one of the first British conquests to obtain a fortified port, thus becoming central to the trade in the region. The opulence of Barbados, born of this flourishing trade, is discovered in these sumptuous buildings, worthy of London.
CHEAPSIDE PUBLIC MARKET
Read moreIt's nothing less than the country's largest farmers' market. Farmers gather in this large hall to offer you everything the rich Barbadian soil can produce: fruit, vegetables, tubers, oil, spices and even meat. It's an explosion of color and sound (music, the shouts of merchants hailing shoppers). A visit here is a must if you want to immerse yourself in the daily life of Barbadians and discover what will be on the menu during your stay. In fact, you'll find street food stalls on the 2nd floor.
ATLANTIS SUBMARINES BARBADOS
Read moreWant to see the ocean floor, but don't have your scuba diving license? No problem: welcome aboard the Atlantis. This electric submarine dives to a good 40 meters to take you for a ride in the depths. It "flies" over the coral reef off Bridgetown. Seated in onion rows, each with its own porthole, passengers can observe the diversity of coral and marine creatures (fish, jellyfish, crustaceans and, if they're lucky, a sea turtle) while the captain narrates the tour. Kids love it!
