On the last Thursday in July, this festival of electronic music in Wadi Rum, in the middle of the desert, is an opportunity to dance all night on recognized DJ's electronica. Every early December, Disah is transformed into a vast racetrack... for camels. More than 500 camels participate in this festival which attracts spectators from all over the region and even from neighboring countries. The camels compete on a vast "camelodrome" followed by their trainers screaming from the top of their pick-up trucks launched at full speed on the edge of the track. The "Feast of the Sacrifice" celebrates Abraham's submission to Allah who asked him to sacrifice his son. When he placed the blade under the throat of his son, the archangel Gabriel replaced it with a sheep. Since then, in memory of this biblical episode, each family traditionally slaughters a sheep. It is prepared as mansaf, the Jordanian national dish. The mutton is cooked in fermented goat's milk and served with oily rice. But the table is set with many other dishes, including the famous sugar-laden pastries.

Muharram is the first month of the Muslim calendar and its first day corresponds to the New Year for all Muslims. The celebration of the new religious year has its roots in the episode of the exile of the Prophet Muhammad and his followers (also called the Hegira) from Mecca to Medina in 622. Upon arriving in Medina, Muhammad observed the new moon. Muharram is one of the most non-working days in Jordan and all businesses are closed. Generally, the observant, but also the non-practicing, gather to share a meal.
