Open - from 09h00 to 18h00

Well integrated in the hollow of the shaded valleys, this large floral park was created in 1990 by a passionate person, Mrs. Magguy Chaulet. After the destruction of her plantation by hurricane Hugo in 1989, she decided to create the first floral park on the island and to present the most beautiful plants. This extraordinary garden is home to a profusion of plants that will delight nature lovers with more than 1,000 species of flowers and tropical plants from all over the world. A map is given to you at the reception desk to guide you on your way. The visit can also be made with the little 100% electric train, the Valombreuse Express (free), which leaves from the garden entrance. Count on at least 1h30 of visit, under high trees from which spring tropical plants with bright colors between the balisiers, the pink, red and white alpinias, the heliconias, the anthuriums, the white porcelain roses... You will discover plants with astonishing names ("character of the men"... and of the women whose color of the flower changes during the day, Chinese hats...). You will observe the hummingbirds that come to drink the nectar of the flowers. The garden of Valombreuse, it is also an extraordinary fauna and in particular of the species of birds, such as the flamingos of the Caribbean and the red Ibis! A play area is dedicated to children in the heart of the garden. The store is located at the end of the visit. The restaurant located on the site is accessible without entering the garden.

THE WINDWARD/LEEWARD DWELLING

Parks and gardens
3.2/5
5 reviews

Located in front of the Caribbean Sea, the Côte-sous-le-Vent house is a park dedicated to this region sheltered from the winds and ideally located, considered as the granary of Guadeloupe in more than one way. Pointe-Noire is the cradle of wood craftsmen and age-old traditions of the Antilles. The town is also called the capital of wood in Guadeloupe. And it is precisely on the former site of the wood house, in a completely refurbished house, that you will find all the riches of the island that you will be able to discover during a trip out of time: its precious woods, its arboretum with its hundred-year-old trees to be discovered in the bend of a path marked out with didactic panels for each specimen, its cocoa, its coffee, its spices... The lovers of pretty flowers will walk in the middle of orchids and bromeliads with the access to a typical Creole house. Educational spaces will make you discover the local crafts, their manufacturing secrets and of course the magnificent flora of Guadeloupe. An exceptional exhibition on the world of piracy will make you discover that the Côte-sous-le-Vent was a high place of filibustering in the 17th century! Outdoor games allow you to discover or rediscover the typical games of the West Indies, to climb in the pirate Kaz (a tree house) and to watch with the long sight if the enemy approaches! A coffee or chocolate-peyi tasting is offered at the end of the visit.

Tropical species perfectly complement the Asian arrangement of many rare species: 80 varieties of palm trees, fruit trees, medicinal and aromatic plants. At the bend in the path, you may have the opportunity to meet harmless iguanas, but also parrots in freedom. A picnic area is available on site. Make an appointment to visit during the weekend.
