The leather articles of Cotacachi

The leather boom in Cotacachi began during the Second World War, generating a strong link with the USA through the manufacture of cigarette cases for soldiers. From wallets to elegant sweaters, art-related objects are designed and manufactured in this charming town known as "Jora Country". In the early 20th century, the people of Cotacachi ventured into the saddlery business. From there, the township became one of the country's leading producers of leather goods and handicrafts. Craftsmen work all types of leather: bull, calf, heifer, lamb. The best leather is chosen to cut the jackets, then the assembly process, which depends on the model and the mold, is lovingly followed to obtain a quality garment. For some years now, the craftsmen have been concentrating on the creation of exclusive designer garments. The large clientele, made up of foreigners and nationals, is looking for unique items, and Cotacachi is the ideal place to find or order them.

The multicolored market of Otavalo

TheOtavalo market, one of the largest in South America, is the ideal place to do a little shopping before heading home. It's a colorful market, run by many of the region's natives, who resell their creations or those brought to them from distant villages. Multicolored ponchos, twirling dreamcatchers and gold-plated jewelry can all be found here in impressive quantities, but be sure to check the quality before you buy, to avoid disappointment when unpacking. By browsing the small boutiques or finding a local jewelry seller on a street corner, you may be lucky enough to buy one or more of the superb necklaces made of golden beads that native women wear in great numbers around their necks. Their local name is wallka, and their number around the owner's neck gives an indication of the wealth of the owner's family. This is probably the most original travel souvenir you can find.

An exceptional chocolate

Known as one of the best in South America, its benefits confirm its reputation. Not only because the cocoa is grown here, but also because the techniques used by its producers are unique. There are many chocolatiers throughout the country, but each one tries to bring his or her own personal touch to chocolate-making. One of the most distinctive features is the production of the chocolate itself. Its high quality is due to the use of cocoa butter instead of vegetable oils. This adds creaminess and a more pronounced flavor to the final product. It's undoubtedly the best gift you can give your friends on your return from Ecuador. Don't miss the tastings offered by certain brands. Take part and discover what characterizes each chocolate bar, depending on where the cocoa was harvested. Don't hesitate to take an interest in chocolates from small, often organic, producers - you might be surprised by the results!

A quality coffee

In recent years, a great effort has been made to improve the quality of the coffee produced in Ecuador, and it now often equals the best coffees from Colombia, the neighboring country from which many Ecuadorian producers come. Whether you prefer it ground or in beans, you'll find various places to buy a few packs, and even try different varieties before making your purchase. Don't miss the opportunity to discover the different brands and roasts before deciding which is your favorite. The best places to buy good coffee are, of course, the farms where it's produced, but you'll also find a few specialist stores. Beware: coffee is quite expensive in Ecuador.

Handcrafted jewellery

Ecuador is renowned for its handcrafted gold and silver jewelry. The pieces, generally made with very fine wires (filigree), make jewelry to be worn as large ornamental pieces, accompanied by stones that add color. The streets of Chordeleg are a perfect illustration of this, with every lamppost a piece of local silversmithing! What's more, if you have a specific idea in mind, you can ask for a piece of jewelry to be made for you on the spot. The craftsmen will be delighted to make it for you, and often even deliver it to your hotel.

Alpaca fabrics

There's nothing so soft and warm as alpaca wool. You can find it in the form of hats, stockings, blankets and ponchos. If you're an avid knitter, take the opportunity to buy a few balls to knit by the fire in winter ;-) Bear in mind that some products come from Peru or are made from alpaca mixed with sheep's wool or another synthetic material.

Typical Ecuadorian blankets are handmade using traditional techniques. If you want to bring home a gift that will last for many years, you'll find what you're looking for in these timeless, hard-wearing products.
