Read moreOpera Theatre built in 1903, today the largest theatre in the city of Bari, and the fourth largest in Italy. It overlooks Corso Cavour. Apart from opera, it also offers musicals, ballets and concerts. Great international artists have trodden the Petruzzelli stage: Herbert von Karajan, Frank Sinatra, Ray Charles, Juliette Greco. And of course, great Italian artists: Eduardo De Filippo, Carla Fracci, Luciano Pavarotti, Giorgio Gaber... Reduced to ashes in a fire in 1991, it was closed for 18 years.

TEATRO MALIBRAN

An opera house, it expanded its repertoire to include comedy under the direction of Carlo Goldoni himself from 1730, and since 1837 has borne the name of the famous Spanish singer Maria Malibran. In 1996, the Malibran became the Theater of the Venetians, pending the reopening of the fire-damaged Fenice. It retains its remarkable period decorations and hosts classical music concerts and plays, under the same management as La Fenice.

TEATRO BELLINI
Read moreClassical plays, contemporary performances and lyrical shows are in the spotlight in this reference theatre in Naples. Inaugurated in 1864, the theatre was devastated by fire five years later. Once restored in 1878, the first performance given there was an opera by Bellini. Note the façade decorated with busts of Neapolitan musicians (Scarlatti, Pergolesi). The horseshoe-shaped interior houses the dressing rooms on six levels one on top of the other. The fresco on the vault, The Triumph of Music, pays homage to Bellini.

Located on Largo Argentina, it is the headquarters of the Teatro di Roma Foundation and certainly one of the city's most popular theaters, thanks to its eclectic program. If you don't wish to attend a performance, there's a small museum inside, which is only accessible on rare occasions and subject to prior booking.
