Practical information : Accomodation Austria
Budget & Tips
Youth hostels are very common in Austria, and very popular with young Austrians and students. They are usually the cheapest option for accommodation (excluding camping), and prices vary depending on whether you choose a dormitory bed or a shared room, or a triple, double or single room.
Youth hostels often offer a wide range of services: vacation programs, ski lessons... What's more, they are often located in very privileged locations, and sometimes even in listed mansions.
Whatever the price, rooms are generally clean and comfortable, and differences between hotel categories are sometimes minimal. You may well find luxurious frühstückpensionen with sauna and hammam at €30 a night, or a really cheap hotel with a room at €43.50 for two people. A 3-star room costs between €90 and €150, doubles and more from 4-star upwards. Rates are generally given "per person" by hoteliers.
Campsites, which are numerous and comfortable, are pretty much the same as in France, open from April to October, although some critics recommend renting heated bungalows. Remember that continental summers are very hot, springs and autumns often sunny, and that camping in Austria is undeniably an inexpensive, safe and pleasant way to visit the country.
Beware: ticks, which carry diseases of varying degrees of danger, are the subject of poster campaigns in spring. When camping, take care to avoid walking barefoot and bare-legged in tall grass.
To be booked
You need to book your accommodation in Vienna or Salzburg well in advance for the most important festivals and events. Similarly, it's best to book your stay in the most popular ski resorts.
What's very local
It's not easy to keep track of all the different names! First of all, the top-of-the-range is represented by the "international" names, those that all foreigners understand: hotel, restaurant. Among the more local names, in descending order of standing, are gasthof, pension or frühstückpension, gasthaus, privatzimmer and bauernhaus, which, in much the same way as here, designate chambres d'hôtes or farm inns that rent out rooms.
For food lovers
Breakfasts are real meals! Hotels compete to offer the best buffets to their guests. A hotel buffet offers hot dishes (sausages, eggs, soups, grilled vegetables, etc.), cereals (muesli, oat flakes, millet flakes, etc.), sprouted seeds, dried seeds and fruit, fresh fruit, a variety of breads, homemade cakes, jams, honey, cow's or plant milk, fruit juices... The ingredients are often organic.
Smokers
Smoking is prohibited in hotel rooms and public areas.
