Gavião belongs to the Portalegre district in northern Alentejo, and shares the banks of the Tagus with its neighbors Ribatejo and Beira Interior. Gavião has four parishes (Gavião and Atalaia, Belver, Comenda and Margem) spread over an area of almost 300 km², with 3,400 inhabitants in the municipality alone. There's a Soap Museum (4 in the world!) and the Belver Museum of Blankets and Tapestries. Near Comenda, in Ribeira da Venda, a small river beach has been laid out with a picnic area and restaurants, a bucolic spot to relax.
