TOMB OF FRANÇOIS-AUGUSTE PERRINON

Cemetery and memorial to visit

A man of great ethics. Born in 1812 in Martinique, he was for the abolition of slavery. As a farmer in the salt mines of Saint-Martin, he participated in Victor Schoelcher's fight by defending the thesis that a paid and freed worker provided better work than a mistreated slave. He died in 1861. A street in Marigot bears his name. If his grave is not of particular interest, it is an opportunity to approach the history of slavery in Saint-Martin.
