Budget & Tips
The majority of sporting activities in Taiwan are free of charge, whether it's forest or mountain hiking, running or cycling along the country's many bicycle paths. On the other hand, most marine activities (diving, surfing, sailing, etc.) must be booked through a professional agency.
What's very local
Taiwanese people are very fond of tai chi: it's very common to see people practicing this martial art in parks. Hiking is also very popular, as evidenced by the large number of weekend hikers on the Elephant Mountain trail in Taipei. Cycling has been a real success for several years now, thanks to the development of cycle paths throughout the country.
Your documents please
To be able to practice scuba diving on your own, PADI certification is a must. You'll also need a boating license to rent an outboard.
To be booked
Several marathons are organized throughout the country, culminating in the Taipei International Marathon in December. To take part in these races, advance registration is recommended.
Main events
The country's most important sporting event is undoubtedly the Tour de Taïwan, a cycling race that has been held throughout the country every spring since 1978. In October, the Taiwan Badminton Open is held, one of the major tournaments of this very popular Asian sport. The World Masters Games 2025 (WMG2025) will take place from May 17 to 30, 2025.
Tourist traps
Some massage parlors serve as fronts for brothels run by mafias, and should therefore be avoided.
