Timetable
Cafés generally open from Monday to Saturday at 7am. In trendy neighborhoods, many establishments offer Sunday brunches. After-hours bars are popular, especially during happy hours in the early evening.
Budget & Tips
A natural fruit juice costs less than €1. A little more for tea, coffee or cappuccino in a specialized café. Cocktails(trago) and beer, even craftbeer (cerveza artesanal), are very affordable, between €2 and €5, a little more in the " chuchis " (chic) clubs.
Age restrictions
The age of majority in Paraguay is 18, but alcohol consumption is only permitted from the age of 20. Carry a photocopy of your passport with you at all times, as it can be very useful, and not just as proof of age.
What's very local
Freshly squeezed fruit juices and craft beer are readily available. But for a good quality coffee or tea, head for the specialist cafés, more and more of which are roasting their own beverages.
It's not often you see the national drink, tereré, on a menu. Café de Acá, in Asunción, is one of the few places offering it. In Bella Vista, in the south of the country, where yerba mate is produced, don't miss Selecta's Mate Bar!
Kids
Cafés are child-friendly, even if they sell alcohol. There probably won't be a high chair for them, but we always manage.
Smokers
Smoking is often permitted on café terraces and in open-air bars. If in doubt, ask the waiter.
