Practical information : Going out Paraguay
Timetable
Late nights in Paraguay. Concerts in bars rarely start before midnight (when it's not raining, otherwise they're often cancelled) and boliches (dance bars, discos) generally close around 1 a.m. from Sunday to Wednesday, 3 a.m. on Thursday, and 5 or 6 a.m. on Friday and Saturday. You can have fun any day of the week, even Sunday, but especially at the beginning of the month, because after the second or third week, there's often not much money left to go out!
Budget & Tips
Going out is not expensive in Paraguay, even in the capital's nicer neighborhoods. Ticket prices for movies, concerts and shows, as well as drinks in bars and clubs, are very reasonable. A large bottle of national beer in a bar costs between €2 and €3, a little more for a draught craft beer; a cocktail(trago) between €3 and €6, a little more expensive on trendy rooftops.
To be booked
The Instagram/culturaasu page is a good source of information on cultural events in the capital. To buy tickets for concerts and shows, it's best to consult and compare the Ticketea (ticketea.com.py) and Tuti (tuti.com.py) websites, each offering events that the other doesn't necessarily have.
Night transport
Buses don't run between 11pm and 5am, so we recommend taking a cab or VTC to get back to your hotel at night - it's safer, quicker and cheaper.
Age restrictions
Alcohol consumption is forbidden for those under 20 years old, even if the majority is 18. It is common to be asked for your papers at the entrance of a bowl, even for those over 40! A photocopy of your passport is enough, so don't go out with the original.
What's very local
If you're going out in the evening, make an effort to dress appropriately, with at least closed-toe shoes and pants, and a smart shirt for the fancier clubs. In bars, you may be asked to share a large glass of beer(chopp) with a group of friends. It's passed around like a maté or tereré!
Smokers
Smoking is often permitted on the terraces of restaurants and cafés, and in open-air bars. As for closed bars, it's not uncommon to see people smoking inside, even though it's not authorized... Although the country produces a lot of cannabis, its use is quite uncommon, illegal and strongly repressed. So if you take out your rolling papers (even to put tobacco inside), you'll probably get a sideways glance.
