Hungary has accommodation to suit every budget, from ten euros a night in a youth hostel dormitory to 5-star palaces. In recent years, there has been a significant increase in the number of boutique hotels - modern, often charming, design-oriented and ultra-comfortable establishments with less than forty rooms. Guesthouses are often cash-only. There are also campsites (or glampings) scattered all over the country.

If you wish to pay by credit card, most hotel chains offer payment in either forint or euros, which may save you some bank charges...

To be booked

In Budapest, make sure you book for the Formula 1 Grand Prix, the Sziget Festival in summer and, to a lesser extent, the Christmas and New Year holidays. Near Lake Balaton, in low season, it may be advisable to book certain accommodations that only open at weekends and therefore have fewer places available.

What's very local

A must: accommodation in one of Budapest's superb bourgeois apartment buildings. Thousands of them are available by the night (in all styles and prices). Hostels, too, are often located in spacious, renovated, century-old apartments. Budapest has a number of spa hotels and baths, such as the Danubius Grand Hotel Margitsziget and the Hotel Gellert.

For food lovers

Breakfasts are often hearty in Hungary. Salty, they include cold cuts, cheese, omelettes and small sandwiches.

Smokers

Smoking rooms have all but disappeared from Hungarian accommodation, but theoretically, in older hotels, it is still possible to smoke in certain rooms marked as such and equipped with adequate ventilation systems.
