During World War II, the Nazis commandeered it and used it as a painting warehouse for the theater of Mulhouse. It is said that an employee of the city would have hidden a copy of the Torah in the wardrobe of the oratory to which he would have suspended a portrait of Hitler to hide the door. In 1959, donations from the Jewish community restored the building, classified under Historical Monuments in 1984.
