SYNAGOGUE
Important synagogue built by a famous architect and used by the Nazis as a paint warehouse for decorations.
This is an important building, constructed by the famous architect Jean-Baptiste Schacre in the mid-19th century. During the Second World War, it was requisitioned by the Nazis and used as a paint warehouse for Mulhouse's theater sets. A city employee is said to have hidden a copy of the Torah in the oratory's cupboard, from which he hung a portrait of Hitler to hide the door. In 1959, donations from the Jewish community made it possible to restore the building, which was listed as a Monument Historique in 1984.
