Day 1: Bombay, The Gateway of India

Steps: Mumbai

Once you have unloaded your luggage, take a cab and head straight for the Gateway of India. This iconic building was built as a triumphal arch to commemorate the visit of King George V and Queen Mary. Ironically, when the Raj ended in 1947, this colonial symbol also became the gateway for the last regiment of the British army. Turn around and enter the world famous Taj Mahal Hotel. Inside are stores, tea rooms, restaurants and a bookstore that sells postcards. Walk up Shivaji Maharaj Marg, towards the Regal Cinema. Across the street is the Café Royal, Mondegar or Leopold Café for a beer or juice break. The area is full of all kinds of stores. On your left, Colaba Causeway. This street is linked to the physical history of Mumbai. It was built by the British to connect the island of Colaba to Bombay. It's lunch time, you have plenty of choices.

Then walk up Kala Ghoda towards the National Gallery of Modern Art on Madame Cama Road. This gallery has regular exhibitions of contemporary art, many paintings and some sculptures. Continue on the same street to the David Sassoon Library. Enter and take a tour of this Venetian Gothic building that was completed in 1870. Turn left onto Fuller Road and walk along Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil Marg, opposite the Oval Maidan and the cricketers and on your right the magnificent Rajabai Clock Tower, the University of Mumbai and Hight Court. Walk straight ahead, turn right, you are near the Flora Fountain. Walk up Veer Nariman Road, Horniman Circle and Jimmy Boy Café, ideal for another break. Turn left, take SA Brelvi Road, then Sir Pherozeshah Metha Road, you arrive at the Bombay Store. This department store is an Ali Baba's cave filled with original gifts and souvenirs to bring back in your luggage. On the front of a building across the street, if you look up, you will find a billboard with a little dog and a gramophone. George Harrison, guitarist of the Beatles, made a record there in 1968. Don't hesitate to stroll through the authentic and fascinating Fort district. Let's continue our journey towards Chatrapati Shivaji Terminus, C.S.T. the only railway station classified as a world heritage site by UNESCO. Continue a little further to Crawford Market, a market of a thousand colors, the ideal place if you want to bring back some spices from your trip.

Back to Fort for dinner: the good restaurants are legion.

Day 2: Mumbai, Malabar Hill

Steps: Mumbai

Take a cab, direction Malabar Hill, residential district. A few moments on the beach of Chowpatty. A little tour to the Mani Bhavan, the house of Mahatma Gandhi, then off to the Hanging Gardens and the Tower of Silence. Lunch at Oh Calcutta, one of the best Bengali restaurants. The afternoon will be spent visiting the Jain Temple, Mahalaxmi Temple and Haji Ali Dargah. Before taking the train to Mahalaxmi station, visit the Dhobi Ghat. Return to Churchgate Station and head to Marine Drive, on the roof of the Intercontinental Hotel, at the Dome, for a drink while watching the sunset over the "string of pearls". Your stay ends on a high note.
