Since its creation, the museum has participated in numerous investigative works in the area of Cumaná, mainly towards the cerro de caiguire where futt discovered an animal fossil of mégathérium (long tail toothless mammals) dating from Pleistocene (the third time of the néogène system which covers most of the recent glaciations, i. e. 15 000 years). More recently, the museum also presents collections of the Venezuelan colonial period, peasant and indigenous cultures.
