Things to see and do Budapest

The square, which has been refurbished, owes its name to the Lóránd Eötvös University, more commonly known as ELTE, where the law department is located. To the left of the square, a beautiful 18th century baroque church (Egyetemi Templom) has a wooden portal carved by the friars of the Order of St. Paul.Bástya, Képiro, Szerb or Magyar streets, starting from the University Square, are narrow and lined with pastel-colored houses, and are ideal for a stroll.

The yellow line of the Budapest subway (1896), still in operation, is the oldest on the European continent (London opened its own in 1863). The original cars are displayed in the Deák underground passageway under Deák tér. With the help of explanations in English, one can learn about the history of this subway, inaugurated by Franz Joseph (and which bore his name at the beginning). An unusual museum that is worth a visit.

At the end of Sütő Street, on Szervita Square, one of Budapest's most beautiful Art Nouveau buildings can be seen, the Török Bank, which refers to its sponsor, a bank owner named Török. Built in 1906, the building has large windows enclosed in a metal formation. It is decorated with a magnificent mosaic of Miksa Róth. The child prodigy of the Hungarian Secession reproduced the Virgin, which he surrounded with tutelary figures of local history, such as Count Széchenyi, Lájos Kossuth or Ferenc Rákoczi.

In response to the sudden development of Budapest and the ensuing housing crisis at the beginning of the ^20thcentury, the prime minister of the time, Sándor Wekerle, decided to build this beautiful, off-center Transylvanian-style garden city on the outskirts of Pest (now Kispest). The architect Károly Kós, a native of Transylvania, was commissioned to design it, and decided to emphasize the sense of community and closeness to the environment.

The magician Houdini that all of Hollywood has praised is one of those Hungarians of unknown origin. Here justice is done to the life of this man who emigrated from Budapest to the United States as a child. The tour (guided, departing every 30 minutes) begins with a riddle to solve and documents Houdini's doings. It concludes with well executed magic tricks. One drawback: the whole thing is touristy and the museum has nothing to do with the original building in the Jewish quarter, where the Weisz became "Houdini".

Unique! In 400^m2 of underground space, Balázs Pálfi set up a pinball museum in 2014 with more than 130 pinball machines, all in working order, assembled from the 1920s to today. Some of the machines are real collector's items, coming from a dozen countries: from Japan to France, passing, of course, by the United States or Spain, or from the X Men to the Simpsons... In this interactive "museum", in addition to admiring the evolution of pinball, you can especially play it!
