PALAIS DES ARTS - MŰPA

Concert halls
5/5
1 review

The Palace of Arts - a cultural complex with a bold architecture - was inaugurated in 2005. It includes a large concert hall (Béla Bartók), a second hall, the Ludwig Museum of Modern Art (in the right wing) and other halls, sometimes used for performances. The musical program is very specialized and there are many headliners from all over the world, from classical music (concerts of the philharmonic orchestra, numerous festivals dedicated to various composers...) to world music, folk music and jazz.

Talking about the Spinoza café and restaurant means immersing yourself in the essence of Hungarian Jewish tradition in Budapest. The café, located in a century-old building, is a centre of contemporary intellectual and cultural life in Budapest. The food is simple, tasty and well served. You can start the day with a good breakfast at 6 € and opt for a Matzo soup or goose legs at lunchtime. Vegetarian menus available as well as bagel sandwiches made from homemade bread. A good selection of wines accompanies the meal. Piano concert every night

Three dancefloors, one of which serves as concert hall, an inner courtyard and numerous bric and broc rooms on the floor. Due to its ideal location on Hungarian Broadway, Instant quickly became one of Budapest's most frequented ruined bars by locals and tourists.

JEDERMANN KÁVÉHÁZ

Bar and caf

On the first floor of the Goethe Institute, Jedermann is the café for German speakers (and everyone else!). And it is Hans van Vliet, a Dutchman who has been in Budapest for twenty years, who is behind it all. This man has some of the most popular bars in the capital to his credit. Food and drinks are served all day long, including on his terrace in the patio-small garden behind in summer. As for the cultural program, Hans is a musician himself, and jazz concerts are held on the small indoor stage of the café almost every day.

NEVERLAND BAR AND ESCAPE ROOM

Escape game

This magical place will transport you away from reality and time. Escape game rooms, augmented reality, bar-restaurant and private room for rent, Neverland is a real entertainment complex spread over more than 750 m2. Solve clues to try to escape from a western, an asylum or a prison. Definitely atypical and a great place to have a good time with friends. The presentation of the story and clues is available in French.

GERLÓCZY CAFÉ - BRASSERIE

Bar and caf

Located on the exquisite little Kamermayer square, away from traffic, the Gerlóczy café is the closest thing to an authentic Budapest-style café of contemporary intellectuals. Its setting is remarkable: installed in an 1892 building, largely preserved, many details contribute to the refinement of this almost Parisian bistro. It is without counting on its large and charming terrace in the summer. Ideal at any time of the day, for a coffee, a slice of cake or a meal.

TRAFÓ (MAISON DES ARTS CONTEMPORAINS)

Concert hall for classical music opera and dance

This contemporary art centre for contemporary dance, housed in a former electrical factory (Trafó comes from TRAnsFOrmateur in Hungarian), is a mythical place in Budapest. Josef Nadj (former director of the National Choreographic Centre in Orléans of Hungarian origin) was a regular guest. Various concerts, performances, plays, workshops, exhibitions (in the gallery area) brighten up this corner of the 9th arrondissement, which was still pale not so long ago.

CINÉMA URÁNIA (URÁNIA NEMZETI FILMSZÍNHÁZ)

Cinema

Built in a grandiose Moorish style for the millennium celebrations of 1896, the Uránia was originally a cabaret theatre. In 1901, the first Hungarian film was shot on its rooftops. Since then, the Uránia's cinemas have only hosted film screenings. A small facelift was offered to him for his 100 years of cinema in 2001. The rooms, in a Moorish style of a flashy palace, are unique. Do not miss the large projection room (dísz térem).

FLOW

Coffee shop and tea room

This specialty coffee shop is definitely one of our favorites in downtown Budapest. Recently installed on Andrássy boulevard, the baristas concoct a multitude of coffees behind the counter while the aficionados, installed on benches or individual tables, type on their computers (everything is provided to recharge their devices). We also love the inventive and excellent cuisine which draws its inspiration from around the world (curries, wraps, soups...) and the desserts. A 100% vegan address!

To find it, remember the number! Passed a kert way (and its bar), one enters the Kuplung: a motorcycle repair workshop of another life, today a large bar. The site has just undergone an initial restructuring, which should lead to the installation of a real concert hall (in 2009, the Ledit was removed and sound sound soundproofed). All local ingredients are there to make night mayonnaise: the inevitable foot, pálinka and various evenings DJ/VJ (visual DJ). If you like well-supported techno or rock, Kuplung is what you need!

MORRISON’S 2

Budapest's most popular student club, a hangout for foreign students. It's guaranteed to be packed every day until late at night. Vintage advertisements are plastered all over the rooms (including one karaoke room), and the two dance floors - one "retro Hungarian" and the other mixing more current international hits - are packed on Friday and Saturday nights. The music isn't very inventive, but who cares? Add to this a large terrace and a billiard table (for a fee) and you've got yourself a tough wake-up call.

HUNGARIAN NATIONAL OPERA

Concert hall for classical music opera and dance €€

After a long break for renovation, the Budapest Opera House, which has been given a facelift while retaining all its splendor, offers performances almost every day of the year (see the institution's website). Ballets, operas... Some seats cost a pittance and the intermission is the perfect opportunity to enjoy the outdoor balcony overlooking Andrássy Avenue. The restaurant on the first floor of the Opera House should reopen, otherwise the buffet on the first floor during the performances is a delight! No shows in summer.
