Blanchetown is a picturesque town along the Murray River. It is known as the site of the Murray River's first dam, Lock No. 1. Blanchetown has a rich history as a river terminal where goods were unloaded from paddle steamers to be cleared through local customs. The town enjoyed a period of prosperity until the railroad bypassed it in favor of Morgan upstream. Blanchetown was one of South Australia's first river settlements, founded in 1855. Several buildings from the era can still be seen, including the post office, hotel, school and police station. The town also offers spectacular views of the cliffs lining the Murray River, as well as activities such as a visit to Brookfield Conservation Park, where wombats can be seen, and wine tasting at Burk Salter Wines.
