VIRGEN DEL PINO

Religious festival

It is the celebration par excellence marking the identity of Gran Canaria. The feast of the Virgin of Pino, the island's patron saint, takes place in and around Teror. The night before, hundreds of pilgrims come on foot from their villages to the Basilica of Teror, some out of devotion, others for fun or curiosity. Local produce, fruit and vegetables, fish and handicrafts are laid out in front of the Virgin, who is on the street in front of the basilica for the occasion. Then transported in a circuit in the heart of the city centre.

Since 1996, a host of international artists have been presenting their latest creations over a two-week period. On the program: concerts, choreographies, unexpected shows and collective creations where dancers even perform "suspended" in the air. They take place mainly in Santa Catalina Park, but also at La Puntilla, Santa Ana Square, Paseo de Las Canteras and Jean-Paul II Park.

FIESTA DEL CHARCO

This ancestral festival of the "pond" or Party del Charco, proceeds in San Nicolás de Tolentino, into Large Canarie. This festival was declared of cultural and tourist interest. Delgado there Venegas, which was bishop of the Canaries, arrived in 1776 at this village and lives that men and women of the village bathed naked in a species of pond "marciega". Scandalized by this show, it excommunicated all the inhabitants of the village. The current inhabitants still remember this anecdote and they continue to bathe in the pond, but equipped, and one benefits from this opportunity to celebrate a competition of fishing there based on techniques of yesteryear and which evolved with the years.
