The owners found archaeological fragments in the foundations. They drew inspiration from the thick Roman walls, installing beams on the ceiling, pillars in the center, exposed stones, clay and whole amphorae on the floor. They brought in contemporary elements that weren't too kitsch, a play of lights and imagined their establishment as an antique tavern with a garden. Good cocktails and grilled meats or wood-fired pizzas. An exhibition room in the basement traces the history of this original place.

You can't miss it, it's the last café before the sea promenade (hence the name!). A real neighborhood bar. The fishermen influenced the decoration, which is made of salvage, with in particular this boat at the quay in a corner. The bar attracts lovers of convivial aperitifs and good cocktails. Set back from the town square, this wine bar is located at the foot of the campanile of the Sv. Marija church. In its flowery patio, the place is just right for an aperitif. Try the slightly bitter tonic grappa (Travarica), those with medicinal herbs (Medica) or with nuts (Orahovica). These alcoholic drinks, prepared with white wine, honey, lavender and other herbal decoctions, are a Dalmatian specialty to be tasted. Located in the Place du Forum, this popular and friendly pub has been open since 1996. It is renowned for its regional and international beers, cocktails made with style and precision, sometimes served in a carafe to be shared by several people, such as the raspberry-flavoured Negroni, for those who like the sweet combinations of fruit cream and bitter Campari, on a vodka base. Gin and tonic drinks are also a big hit. To be consumed in moderation, of course! The musical evenings with the DJ can become very festive.

Nestled in a period building, this small and very typical pub is discreet during the day. But once the night falls, you can easily spot it by the sound that emanates from it. The Phanas Pub becomes the den of the night owls, who love to play nicely elbows at the counter to order a beer, likes rock music or more dance. A small neighborhood bar that, in twenty years, has become one of the best places in Rijeka to go out at night. Very frequented by locals and tourists, victim of its success, it overflows largely on the street. During the day in winter, we appreciate the moleskin benches inside, but it fills up very quickly in the evening. The Croatian beers, the various brandies and rakija served in meters of shots quickly heat the atmosphere. The DJ, who is rather rock, soul and latino, is appreciated. A lot of people dance and it's still good fun!

With its panoramic terrace overlooking the square, and its design space inside, this wine bar has nothing in common with a small neighborhood bodega. It's more like a trendy bar-restaurant-club. And that's exactly what it is! "Sabbia" means sandin Italian and, in fact, you can sit on the ground floor, opposite the beach, at a coffee table and on benches placed on gratings. A pleasant relaxing break for a cool drink, with or without alcohol. Good cocktails menu. Upstairs, two atmospheres, pizzeria-bar-lounge or more chic lounge café with breathtaking views of the coast. In the evening, it comes alive with the DJs. In short, beach club, restaurant and music evenings.

The Colosseum Lounge is a huge club, with a bar-restaurant on the first floor, a café lounge during the day, the sea just a stone's throw away and a lively atmosphere in the evening. The Colosseum also has the advantage of being located in the city centre. If you're staying in Opatija, there's no problem getting there by car! From the beginning of the season, there are cocktail-bar "before" parties, beach parties and a nightlife that is always very disco house, animated by resident DJs and international guests.

Named after a famous mayor of New York in the 1930s, who before that was the American consul in Rijeka, this pub has all the Anglo-Saxon canons. Ceiling fans, Liberty lamps, an impressive list of strong alcohols, great vintages of whiskies and rums, the tone is set. During the day, it is rather the beers (Croatian, Belgian, German) and cocktails that go best (with moderation!). You can also taste the excellent machiatto. Good atmosphere, especially at night when the DJ turns up the sound. All these elements together promise a good time.

On the second floor of this classic building, a contemporary art gallery has been installed since 2014 in a beautiful space with several rooms. Drugo more, the association managing the venue, focuses on the work of Croatian and foreign artists who express themselves through concrete works, ephemeral installations, performances or new media. In the city center, across from the market and not exactly on the waterfront, this neighborhood cafe-bar charges fair prices compared to beach bars and other hotel cafes. Its elevated terrace offers a perfect spot to see real life in Opatija, locals and tourists on the street. The retractable glass walls make it possible to be on the terrace during the off season. Delivered for summer 2020 at the top of the pedestrian artery (Korzo), the Academia's interior architecture is the work of the Rijeka Život Design studio, which has a strong presence in the city's contemporary renovation. Wooden tables and furniture in shades of green and orange under round arches and floral decorative details on the walls make for a cosy café-tea room. Morning espresso with the finest Hausbrandt kava beans, Callebaut hot chocolate, organic tea, fresh juices and other cool drinks. Ice cream or pastries during the day.
