CHAPEL SAINT MARY

This charming little chapel is not to be missed. We take pictures of her from all angles, she brings a little extra soul to the village. Contrary to what one might think, the chapel was completely rebuilt in 1988. It's some kind of reenactment. The original building stood on the same spot but was burned by German soldiers in 1944. The entire village was destroyed. It religiously respects the plans drawn up by Plečnik who wanted it to blend in perfectly with the landscape.

Road from Trg Svobode, on the main town square, 15 minutes by car or on foot. This is the monument overlooking Kobarid. The ossuary was inaugurated in 1938 by the Duce, as Kobarid was Italian at the time. The ossuary, built around the Church of St. Anthony, contains the remains of over 7,000 Italian soldiers, both identified and unknown. The church is decorated with frescoes by Luka Šarf. The Last Judgment fresco is the best preserved.

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH

She has a very special charm. Nestled a few meters above the lake, its Romanesque architecture gives it the appearance of a medieval chapel. Relatively narrow, it hides a treasure of the Middle Ages within it. This is a carved wooden head representing St. John the Baptist and dating from the 13th century. Several paintings and frescoes marked by the past centuries adorn the walls, giving a very special atmosphere to the building. According to legend, this is where the first Catholics of Carniola were baptized. Documentation in English.

A short stop before continuing on to the castle. It is a neo-Gothic church dating from 1905 erected on the site of a 15th century Gothic church. The plans of the building are by the architect Friedrich von Schmidt, who also designed the town hall of the Austrian capital. The sculptures were made by Ivan Vurnik, a native of Radovljica. The frescoes (1932-1937) by Slavko Pengov depict the Last Supper and the Last Judgement with a portrait of Lenin in place of Judas. Sculpture from Plečnik in front of the entrance.

This sacred place is a masterpiece of the famous architect Jože Plečnik who was able to give life and spirit to the remaining elements of the church burnt down by Nazi soldiers during the Second World War. He has restructured part of the building: relocation of the main entrance, use of innovative materials, etc. It is one of the last major works of this famous architect before his death. Guided tour highly recommended.

CHURCH OF THE HOLY TRINITY (SV. TROJICA)

Religious buildings

The church was built in the year 1500, after a tank manufacturer discovered by the greatest chance the presence of mercury in this area. Obviously, this underground resource has allowed the rapid establishment of a city to manage its operations. A wooden church was therefore erected on the site of the discovery. In the 1980s, it was substantially modified to ensure its sustainability. The municipal apiary is located in the garden of the religious building.

The first church, a Romanesque basilica with three naves, was consecrated in 1142. It was renovated in the 15th century but a few decades later, an earthquake made further alterations necessary. HOLY SPIRIT CHURCH

Religious buildings

The church was built in 1916 by soldiers of the Austro-Hungarian army in memory of the dead in action on the surrounding peaks. Even then, it served as a spiritual refuge for them. The interior is decorated in the style of the Viennese Secession. On the walls are the names of the 2,808 soldiers who fell at the front. A place full of emotion where meditation is essential. It occupies a central place in the material and moral reconstruction of places and people. It was recently awarded the European Heritage Label in 2018.

FRANCISCAN CONVENT (SAMOSTAN KOSTANJEVICA)

Abbey monastery and convent

The royal crypt is located at the end on the right. It has a mortuary atmosphere, unlike the chapel, with its richly decorated ceilings. For aristocrats, monarchists and royal history enthusiasts. Situated on a hilltop overlooking Nova Gorica and Gorizia, it offers a very interesting view of the architectural break between the old Italian city and the new Slovenian city. The first reason to visit the museum is that it is one of the few historical remains of the modern period on this side of the border. The crypt of the Bourbons is the eternal resting place of the unfortunate Charles X, driven into exile after the July Revolution. The convent, monumental, recalls a glorious and sumptuous past. It is still in use today. In the same complex, one will push with delight the doors of the impressive library which counts among its most famous works a dedicated copy of the Slovenian grammar of Adam Bohorič (end of the 16th century). The church is full of valuable information on the historical context with notes translated into French. Finally, a detour to the garden is a must in the summertime to admire and be intoxicated by the subtle essences of the famous bourbon roses. A nice escapade that offers a nice point of view on the border and on the architectural nuances that exist between Gorizia and Nova Gorica.

SVETA GORA BASILICA

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

From its 681 m altitude, the view is breathtaking if the sky is clear. On the site, there was a church destroyed by the Turks in the 14th century. Our Lady appeared to a young shepherdess and ordered her to build a new church (1544), which was destroyed during the First World War. The current one dates from 1928. The stained glass windows stand out for their bright colours. The Way of the Cross, so baroque, is one of the last traces of the old building since it dates back to 1765. A museum is also dedicated to the Great War.

SVETI PRIMOŽ NAD KAMNIKOM

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

This is a popular hiking destination in the vicinity of the small town of Kamnik, located at an altitude of 826 m above sea level. It is the site of the Gothic church of Saints Primus and Felicia, a small bistro and the quaint little church of St. Peter, which stands just at the top of the hill and offers a stunning view of the surrounding hills and the Ljubljana basin at its feet. It's a great place to plan a picnic!

CHURCH OF SAINT ANTOINE AND VIEWPOINT

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

The climb is steep from the city centre. However, the difference in altitude makes it possible to reach this church at the top of a hill in about thirty minutes. When the weather is mild, the view of Idrija and the surrounding mountains invites contemplation. The church itself is no longer open to visitors, but it reminds us that the patron saint of miners still watches over his city. A monumental Way of the Cross accompanies the last effort of ascent in a fascinating setting.

The Church of the Annunciation (13th century) has undergone various transformations. It has many 15th century frescoes. Outside, a Passion of Christ (14th century) and a Saint Christopher (1464). Note: a 17th century bell and a neo-Gothic porch from the 19th century. The ensemble is truly prodigious and is one of the most charming little churches in the region. Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

The church is dedicated to St. Ulrich, Bishop of Augsburg in the 10th century. Scenes depict the patron saint as well as St. Corbinian, known for his evangelization campaigns in the 8th century. ASSUMPTION CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

The paintings are from the Venetian school. The ruins of a 16th-century castle, once the estate of the Coronini family and then of the Attems family, remain today. Some facts have marked the history of the village such as the visit of Pope Pius VI in 1782 during his trip to Vienna. To the east, don't miss the Church of the Holy Cross. It houses an altar from 1515. The tower is one of the four ancient defensive towers erected in the 15th century to guard against the Turkish assailant. From these heights, the King of Italy observed the Battle of the Soča in 1917.

CHURCH OF THE ANNUNCIATION

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

One of the most beautiful examples of Slovenian Gothic. The original church dates from the 13th century. Many changes were made in the following centuries. The three-nave hall choir was designed between 1521 and 1532 by Master Jurko of Škofja Loka. Sveta Nadelja (Holy Sunday) adorns the facade near the entrance. This representation is the work of John of Ljubljana (1460); it depicts the holy day of the good Christian. Many frescos. The church has the largest golden altar in Slovenia, designed by Jurij Karnos (1652).

ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH

Churches cathedrals basilicas and chapels

In the small village of Suha, in the middle of nature, we find this church built in the first half of the 15th century. Its peculiarity: it has preserved magnificent medieval frescoes painted on the vault of the choir and the apse, representing the life of Christ, the apostles and the angels. They are classified as national heritage. The baroque altar, dating from 1672, is also of great beauty. Nice scenic stage which is worth the (short!) trip.
