Practical information : Eating out Formentera
Timetable
In Formentera, as in the rest of Spain, meals are spread out throughout the day. In the evening, restaurants fill up around 9pm, after customers have gathered earlier for drinks and tapas. Mealtimes generally follow the Spanish rhythm, with service from 1pm to 3:30pm-4pm and from 8pm to 11pm. Some establishments, however, adjust their hours to accommodate a public accustomed to dining earlier. Even so, restaurants that open at midday are quite rare. A word of advice: in summer, remember to book your table in advance, as the best places fill up fast!
Budget & Tips
In Ibiza, it's possible to eat well at a reasonable price, but in Formentera, you'll need to set aside a certain budget. Although the island offers a wide variety of restaurants, it will be difficult to get by for less than €20-25. Most restaurants fall into the "fine dining" or "upscale" categories. For those on a budget, a sandwich on the beach(entrepà in Catalan) will do just fine. At lunchtime, the menú del día, generally between €14 and €18, sometimes less, offers good value for money.
What costs extra
The price of the service is included in the final bill. Feel free, however, to add a tip if you enjoyed the service! In Formentera, as in the rest of Spain, neither bread nor water is offered.
The local way
Start the day with a hearty breakfast of bread, cheese and cold meats.
Head to the market to pick up a few local products at a good price.
End the meal with a Hierba ibicenca or other house liqueur.
Order a tallat amb gel, i.e. a hazelnut coffee with an ice cube.
Smokers
While smoking is prohibited in restaurants (the same rules apply here as on the peninsula and in France), until recently smoking was tolerated on terraces as long as it did not disturb others. In the wake of the pandemic, however, legislation has changed, and smoking is no longer permitted on terraces throughout the Balearic Islands. The easiest way to find out is to ask the establishment's staff.
