MARCHÉ AUX FLEURS
Read moreOn the new esplanade of Saint-Pierre's covered market, you'll have no trouble finding the weekly flower market. All the tropical plants you're looking for are there, but don't expect to bring them back by plane: phytosanitary controls are strict, and it's best to go through a professional specialized in plant transport. But don't be too "potty" about it, and go there at least for the eyes and the scents. After all, what makes this market so successful is the quality of the products on offer at lower prices.
LES CHAISES DU GOL
Read moreThese chairs made of filaos wood come from the forest of Etang-Salé. Their caning is made from rushes cut on the banks of the Etang du Gol. Rustic, solid and comfortable, they are part of the authentic Creole furniture. Some local craftsmen perpetuate the tradition, notably Bernard Lépinay and Pierre Lallemand. Go and meet them in their craftsman's workshop which smells good wood. You can also discover this know-how at the Pointed Chapel, at the Villèle de l'Éperon museum, above Saint-Gilles les Bains.
