ATELIER DE PARIS – CAROLYN CARLSON

Theatre workshops and courses
3/5
2 reviews

As his title indicates, this workshop is more a workplace than a concert room. In spite of this, there is a public rehearsal of creations imagined by companies in residence, as well as pieces given after regular classes organized regularly on the spot. A few choreographers from here: Trisha Brown, Suzanne Linke, Bill T. Jones, Wim Vandekeybus, Michèle-Anne de Mey, Dominique Boivin, Susan Buirge.….......................................................................................................... Cartoucherie, set of buildings where the Paris-Carolyn-Carlson Workshop settled in 1999. The latter bears the name of the famous American dancer and choreographer who chose to live in Paris as early as 1971. This spiritual heir of Alwin Nikolais, on the request of Rolf Liebermann, led the Theater Research Group - GRTOP - from the Paris Opera from 1974 to 1980 as a choreographer. She played a pioneering role in the emergence of the new contemporary French dance. An adept of a dance she happily defines as "visual poetry" - with the essential complicity of musicians like René Aubry or Michel Portal - Carolyn Carlson is also head of the National Choreographic Center of Roubaix Nord-Pas de Calais.

Masterclasses, summerlab and other workshops are organized all year round and allow to professionalize in certain disciplines with high-level artists. These demanding formations are not accessible to beginners, however, and they are best used before engaging.

This is one of the architectural jewels of the capital, having experienced in recent years major restoration work to restore its splendour. With a pool of impressive dimensions - 33 m x 10 m - the pool of Amiraux is distinguished by its history. The building, designed by Henri Sauvage in 1922, was intended to house the working families in a collective way. The government's desire at the time to give everyone access to leisure led to the inauguration of the swimming pool in 1930. Two floors of passageways lead to individual cabins. The tiles of the beaches and the exterior façade are identical to that of the Paris metro: swim in a jewel of Art Nouveau architecture which is classified as a Historical Monument! The complex has recently been upgraded, including a modernization of access to showers for people in wheelchairs. The atmosphere is very friendly, many regulars meet there, and moviegoers as it is in this pool that was shot a scene from the film Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain. Referring to a work by Tennessee Williams, this space was created in 1983 in a former printing plant. The architect Pierre-Louis Faloci rehabilitated it by respecting the glass windows which shed a great light on the activities of this "research laboratory" open to theatre people, choreographers, performers, video designers, artists… there is a hall for performances and five rehearsal studios. Workshops and training courses in contemporary dance are offered in this world apart. Among the artists who were able to see at the Glass Menagerie include Claudia Triozi, Alain Buffard, Jérôme Bel, Emmanuelle Huynh, Raimund Hoghe, Rachid Ouramdane, Boris Charmatz, Nadia Lauro, Nicolas Floc'h, Daniel Larrieu, Francesca Lattuada… Take place in these places Les Inaccoutumés since 1995 and Strange cargo since 1997.

Renovated in 2009, this swimming pool with its two pools of 25 m and 12.50 m welcomes you to a large sports complex (gymnasium, martial arts room...). It has the advantage of not being (too) crowded. We appreciate the bay window that runs along a whole section of the room, offering a pleasant luminosity. The only drawback is that the schedules are quite limited during the week (except on Wednesdays).

The Poissonniers sports center is equipped with a stadium and a 400-meter athletic track. Inside, there are two gymnasiums with tracks (volleyball, handball, basketball, badminton), three tennis courts and a climbing wall. The buildings are a bit dilapidated, the place is sometimes difficult to find, as it is wedged between a former military building and the ring road, but the sports facilities themselves are acceptable. Some people say that the whole place should soon benefit from a deep renovation. The place is accessible with the tramway.
