THE CANAL OF CASTILLE
Read more207 km of canal and 49 locks were built to take to the sea the cereals produced in the fields of Castile. It took almost a hundred years to build it (1753-1849) and after a century of navigation, transportation ceased in 1959. Today, roads and train have replaced it and the water of the canal is used for the irrigation of crops. But the slipway where the mules fired the barges is still there. It is a cool and quiet place for walks to old mills and small villages. From the Herrera de Pisuerga pier you can take boat walks on the canal to observe flora and fauna.
