Former castle of King Nikola, today transformed into a library with a cultural center, an art gallery and a museum of archaeological wealth. Near the Bosnian border, 40 km west of the city, this cave is home to the oldest evidence of human presence discovered to date in Montenegro. Inhabited for nearly 150,000 years, from the Middle Paleolithic to the early Bronze Age, it has not yet revealed all its secrets and archaeologists are still working there. In 2004, they found a human tooth dating back to the Neanderthal period (between 120,000 and 35,000 years BC).

Another information office is located at the bridge over the Tara River, this one in Zabljak (located near the gas station) and a third open office is located on the road to the Lake. This agency offers rafting, kayaking, bungy jumping, jeep tours, accommodation in the Tara canyon but also in Žabljak. The staff is quite young and speaks mainly English. This monastery also known as Dubočica located near Pljevlja "moved" in 1980. It consists of a church erected in the 16th century and newer buildings topped with carved wooden galleries. The church was restored at the end of the 19th century and is covered with murals depicting the resurrection of Christ. Those in the narthex were painted in the 1590s by Father Strahinja, and those in the nave depict the Serbian Nemanjić dynasty.

The most beautiful mosque in the country is located in the heart of the city. Built between 1585 and 1594 by order of Hussein Pasha Boljanić representative of the imperial court of Istanbul, it has retained its original form and is a testimony to the Ottoman past. Manuscripts of the Qur'an, including one dated to the 16th century, are preserved there. Its minaret is over 40 m high and the building is decorated with softly coloured paintings. It is said that the pasha had two oxen tied to a cart and chased them to draw the foundation lines of the mosque.

The Emperor's Bridge is a beautiful monument. Built in 1894, the Emperor's Bridge is the largest construction project of that time. It was built with the help of the Russian Tsar Alexander III, who gave his name to the bridge. The plan for the construction of the bridge in Slivlje, on the order of Prince Nikola, was drawn up by doctor Josip Slade. According to this plan, the bridge was built of ashlar over a length of 269 m, while in the middle it is over 13 m high and has eighteen arches. Beautiful view not to be missed from the bridge.

Overlooking the city, the Orthodox Church of Sveti Vassilije is quite classical in style but beautifully encased in white marble. Inside are the names of the 3,098 Montenegrin and Serbian fighters from Herzegovina. These Montenegrin and Serbian fighters died during the great war of liberation, which took place between 1876 and 1878 under the command of Prince Danilo. At the bottom of the steps on the right side of the monumental staircase, you can see a war memorial from the 1990s.

This peak is said to offer one of the most beautiful views of the massif and the Black Lake.

Medjed (2 287 m), which literally means "bear", is the best known and one of the most photographed peaks in Durmitor. This peak is the most recognized because it is the closest to the town of Žabljak, the center of the region, while with its incredible background scenery it stands proudly above the beautiful Crno Jezero (Black Lake, 1,416 m), a beautiful lake shape in the form of number eight. Medjed Peak, Savin Kuk (2,313 m) and Sljeme (2,455 m, behind) form an unforgettable panorama that many associate with the famous Canadian mountain lakes.

If you look closely at the Medjed ridge, you can see Veliki Medjed (Big Bear, 2 287 m) on the right side of the ridge, and Mali Medjed (Little Bear, 2 223 m) on the left side of this beautiful ridge. These two rock bears are remarkable natural sculptures.

From the summit you can see the Terzin Bogaz peak (2 303 m), the mighty Sljeme wall (2 455 m), Bandijerna (2 409 m), Milosev Tok (2 426 m), Zupci (2 309 m) and the beautiful glacial cirque of Velika Kalica valley (1 870 m).

East of the summit you will see Savin Kuk (2 313 m), Mount Sinjajevina (2 203 m) and Jezerska Povrs (Lake Plateau).

Route: Žabljak - Indjini Dolovi (1 750 m) - Klještina - Mali Medjed (2 223 m) - Grebenski prelaz. Level: intermediate. Duration: 4 hours of walking (one way).

Offering a beautiful view over the whole city, the Bedem fortress, embedded in the old town, is a still living testimony of the medieval period. Built on this rocky promontory in the ^4th century by the Romans, the fortress was conquered by various invaders, before being destroyed by the Turks in 1705. Its walk along the battlements and its keep are well preserved. Ideal place for medieval art lovers! In summer, various cultural events take place here, including Bedem Fest, a rock and electro music festival.

The two lakes are located at an altitude of 1,686 and 1,711 m respectively, between the Bobotov and Prutaš mountains. Considered by many as the most beautiful site of the massif. Level: intermediate. Duration: 3.5 hours via the village of Mala Crna Gora, 3 hours via Dobri do. The Škrčko lakes are hidden in the middle of Durmitor's peaks and accessible only on foot. In the heart of nature, it is a visit worthwhile for the beauty of its sites.
