Guardian fortress of the Portes de Bretagne, the Château de Fougères is both a historic fortified castle and a theater of entertainment. Built in the 12th century, this imposing, emblematic monument is one of the must-see family destinations at the gateway to Brittany. It is the largest medieval fortress in Europe in its current state of preservation. It has undergone many alterations over the years, notably when it was acquired by the Dukes of Brittany in the 1430's. Tours last around 1h30 and are organized around a scenographic tour with a guide or a free audioguide, which is great fun for children. You'll discover the castle's 3 towers, bailey, curtain walls and several rooms. There's even an enigmatic tour for younger visitors, aged 6 and over: they'll be guided by the château's mascots, Mélusine and Médusa. In June, alternating with the Fête des Remparts de Dinan, Les Riches Heures de Fougères plunges visitors into the daily life of a medieval encampment, with demonstrations of traditional arts and crafts, a medieval market, a staged attack and a medieval-inspired ball and meal. Numerous events and activities are organized at the castle throughout the year. At the foot of the castle, you can visit La Coursive, an interpretation center for the architecture and heritage of Fougères. Closed from January 8 to 31. June to September: open 7 days a week, 10am-7pm, including public holidays. October to May: daily (except Monday) 10am-12.30pm and 2pm-5.30pm. Free admission for children under 6. Adults: €10 (concessions €5). Groups: €7 (self-guided or with audioguide). Family pass: €25. Château + passageway annual pass: €25. Vacation vouchers. Visually impaired visitors can discover the architecture of an artillery tower thanks to a tactile model in the Raoul II tower.

Easy to visit, parking near the castle (6 eur for entire day). Good explinations in French, English, Spanish and Italian. Audioguides included in the entrance price.
Castle itself not entirely possible to visit with wheelchair.
