MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF FERNS
Petit Futé's opinion on MEDIEVAL CASTLE OF FERNS
Enter the largest medieval fortress in Europe! It all began in the year 1000, when the first castle of Fougères, the work of the first baron of the House of Fougères, was built. It defended the north-eastern part of the border area of the Duchy of Brittany, the Marches of Brittany, against Normandy, the territory of the kings of England, but also against Anjou and Maine under the control of the kings of France. Built on a promontory overlooking the Nançon valley, the very beautiful feudal castle gives Fougères all its cachet. In 1166, it was destroyed by the English king Henri II Plantagenêt. Raoul II immediately rebuilt a stone fortress on the same site. In the Middle Ages, the fortress was successively demolished and rebuilt by the English and the Bretons. In 1793, the castle is removed by the Chouans, led by the Marquis Armand de La Rouërie. Property of the city in the 19th century, the castle remains, despite the hardships of time, a fine example of medieval military architecture, with its thirteen towers, connected by crenellated curtain walls, delimiting an enclosure of nearly 2 ha. The monument has undergone major renovations, and visits are now made along a scenic route with a guide, an application or an audioguide. Each year, the Riches Heures de Fougères plunges visitors into the daily life of a medieval camp with a demonstration of common crafts, a medieval market, the staging of an attack and a ball.
