AR MEN'S LIGHTHOUSE
A lighthouse at sea inaugurated in 1881 on the Île-de-Sein, a historic monument worth discovering.
Located about ten kilometres west of the island, on a reef beaten by a raging ocean, the Ar Men lighthouse, inaugurated in 1881, rises 29.80 m above the highest seas. Its construction took 14 years. These were years during which the guardians' shifts were most perilous. They were sometimes blocked for several weeks because of a swell too strong. The sea state then made it impossible to approach the lighthouse and gave the supply ship a hard time, even though each time it had to succeed in the acrobatic feat of first hoisting the guards of the up watch and then picking up those of the down watch. The pilot of the launch was constantly manoeuvring and had to show incomparable mastery to preserve the lives of these men. An epic that ended in 1990 with the transition to automation.
