A site featuring the ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Saint-Maurice, a hall and a fine church pediment.

Beware, exceptional landscape, strong emotions guaranteed! At the edge of the Carnoët forest and its many hundred-year-old trees, on the right bank of the Laïta, are the ruins of the Cistercian abbey of Saint-Maurice. It was founded in 1177 by Abbot Maurice Duault of Langonnet Abbey, while the land on which it is situated was offered by the Duke of Brittany Conan IV. What exactly can you see in these ruins? This place still offers us a chapter room from the 13th century as well as a beautiful church pediment. It's not much, but it's enough to realize the magic of the place, its spirituality. A permanent exhibition, housed in the farm, also allows you to discover the history of the buildings as well as the life of the Cistercian monks. Centuries-old sequoias can also be found on this protected natural site. Visits are made with an audioguide, including a children's version. Don't miss either the observation of a protected colony of bats that have taken up residence in the attic of the abbot's house. This observation is done with an infra-red camera. And, in summer, other temporary exhibitions are offered as well as nature visits and activities for the whole family. It will take you about an hour and a half to visit the abbey site of Saint-Maurice. If you let the charm work to the gentle song of the birds, you will surely need a little more time: you don't leave this place without being moved.

Ruins of an abbey in a forest and next to the river Laita. Very good audiotour available in multiple languages including Dutch. Thanks to the audiotour you get a good impression of how the abbey must have been.
