SAN MARTIN CHURCH
The architect Boucher de Perthes (to whom we owe the design of Basilique Sainte-Anne d'Auray in Morbihan and the reconstruction of Hôtel de Ville de Paris after the defeat of 1870) established the original layout of this building. The patronage of the church comes from the middle name of the mayor in his term during the decision to build this new parish of Brest in 1861. The works started in 1869 and were completed in 1877 with the construction of the bell tower. But Saint-Martin church, like most churches in Brest, was not spared during the liberation of the town: its imposing bell tower-porch was actually heavily damaged, just like its roof which underwent devastating fires. However, it could be restored to its original state and find its Neo-Romanesque and Gothic style. More recently, after a rock fall weakening the bell tower-porch, new restoration works have been done, giving its former look back to the church.
