An impressive new gate in Vézelay, with two defensive towers to protect the inhabitants.

Not much remains of the imposing fortifications that surrounded the city in the Middle Ages. The influx of pilgrims brought prosperity and armed bands coveted its wealth. This is why a double ring of ramparts was built between the 12th and 14th centuries, protecting both inhabitants and pilgrims. The impressive Porte Neuve, flanked by two defensive towers and surmounted by the Salle des Gardes, allows one to enter Vézelay by understanding the path of the pilgrims taking refuge behind the walls.

La porte d'entrée de la vieille ville
En voyant les restes de cette porte, on peut imaginer les fortifications de l'ancienne ville de Vézelay. C'est un bon point de départ pour entrer dans la vieille ville, découvrir les petites rues et arriver jusqu'à la basilique.
