Or when a fortified castle is built before our eyes following the methods of the 13th century. A construction site... unique in the world!
In 1997, Michel Guyot (the owner of Château de Saint-Fargeau) took on the crazy challenge of building a château fort in the heart of the Poyaud countryside. His brief? Scrupulously follow 13th-century methods, and take advantage of this remarkable natural environment to draw on the raw materials needed for construction (stone, wood, earth, sand, clay...). Nearly 30 years later, the work continues, and Guédelon has become a scientific, historical, educational, tourist and human site. And above all, it's the only one of its kind in the world! Quarrymen, stonecutters, masons, lumberjacks, carpenters, blacksmiths, tilers, cartwrights and tailors build here on a daily basis (and in period costume), while interacting with visitors. Coming and returning to Guédelon also means having the privilege of following the progress of work year after year: the fortified enclosure, the dwelling and its frameworks, the chamber and its murals, the firing rooms and their rib vaults, the parapet walk... Or how to immerse yourself in life in the Middle Ages, magnificently reconstituted, thanks in particular to the mill built with the Inrap as part of an experimental archaeology approach. With all these highlights, it's hardly surprising that Guédelon has become the most visited tourist attraction in the département, and the second most visited in Burgundy (after the Hospices de Beaune)! Allow 4 to 6 hours to get the most out of your visit. It's worth noting that you can also eat there (by ordering a picnic basket, for example!).
