Freshly renovated, this Renaissance castle is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful monuments in Burgundy. A sort of miniature Versailles! Built between 1542 and 1550 on the plans of the Italian architect Sebastiano Serlio (who worked for François I), it was intended for Count Antoine de Clermont, governor of the Dauphiné and grand master of the Waters and Forests of France, husband of the sister of the mistress of Henri II, Diane de Poitiers. He greatly contributed to the influence of the Italian Renaissance in France. Built on a square plan with four corner pavilions, the building was originally surrounded by a moat defended by drawbridges. The first marquis of Louvois was the owner for a time, and had the moat filled in. You will appreciate this stroll from another era, as much for the richness of the decorations as for the elegance of its 50-hectare park where the pond and its islet with its small 18th century folly is conducive to beautiful romantic walks.
Numerous events take place throughout the year to further enhance this monument, including exhibitions of artists, fairs, "Rendezvous in the garden", as well as a music festival and even night tours not to be missed.
Finally, not to be missed during your visit is the Pharsalian Gallery which houses the longest mural painting in France from the 16th century, attributed to the Italian painters of the first School of Fontainebleau. This makes Ancy-le-Franc the direct rival of the castle of Fontainebleau in Seine-et-Marne!
