LA GARE HISTORIQUE
Inaugurated in 1887, the former Barca d'Alva station is located at the eastern end of the Douro railroad line (Linha do Douro). As the line's terminus, it played an important role and was also the gateway to Spain, connecting with the La Fregeneda line to Salamanca in Spain. For decades, the station was very busy and was an international rail hub for the transport of goods, particularly port wine. As rail traffic declined and roads improved, the Barca d'Alva - La Fregeneda line was closed in 1985 on the Spanish side and decommissioned in 1988 on the Portuguese side. The station, now abandoned and frozen in time, is of great heritage interest. Conversion projects are regularly discussed.
