Manastir Tavna
The oldest Serbian Orthodox monastery in the Bijeljina region, founded in the century but plundered many times. Beautiful setting.
This Serbian Orthodox monastery (Manastir Tavna/Манастир Тавна) is the oldest in the region. Located 23 km southwest of Bijeljina, in Banjica/Бањица, and occupied by a dozen nuns, it benefits from a beautiful setting: on the banks of the Tavna River and at the foot of the Majevica massif (916 m above sea level). Founded in the 11th century, it has been plundered many times. Its 14th-century catholicon is dedicated to the Trinity and features a bell tower added in 1884. The interior was repainted in 1995 by the artist responsible for decorating the St Basil of Ostrog monastery in Bijeljina.
