Vodopad Kravica
Superb waterfalls, 26-28 m high, surrounded by lush nature. But the site is marred by dreadful development.
These waterfalls (Vodopad Kravica) are among the most beautiful in Europe. They lie 7.5 km south-east of Ljubuški. Alas, the site is copiously spoiled by dreadful developments: concrete paths, plastic footbridges over the water, cafés-restaurants of dubious taste and a swimming area delimited by unsightly buoys. This complex, sold under the English name ofOasis in Stone, is also the most expensive place to visit in the country. Here, the Trebižat River jumps from 26 to 28 m in height over a vast arc-de-circle 120 m wide. For thousands of years, this tributary of the Neretva has been depositing small tufa particles here, which over time have formed sumptuous waterfalls surrounded by lush greenery. It's true that the Kravica Falls are reminiscent, in miniature, of the Iguazú Falls on the border between Argentina and Brazil. Two old stone watermills from the Ottoman period have been preserved on the heights, along the path leading down from the huge parking lot. However, due to overcrowding, the latter is not free in summer. Another negative factor to take into account before considering a visit here. Free alternative: Koćuša Falls (Koćuša Vodopad), near Veljaci, 10 km northwest of Ljubuški. Here, the Mlade River falls 5 m high and around 30 m wide, shortly before joining the Trebižat. Here, too, the river is ideal for bathing, with benches, a restaurant and parking facilities, and a working mill.
