The Cave of Hira is the place where the Prophet received the revelation from the archangel Djibril (Gabriel), before being driven out of Mecca. It is located on the Jabal al Nour, the Mountain of Light, 4 km northeast of the al-Haram Mosque. During the hajj, able-bodied pilgrims are expected to walk to the cave from the Grand Mosque. This is the occasion of great human traffic jams, and sometimes dramas. Accidents created by crowd movements and resulting in hundreds of deaths have occurred on several occasions.
